Traditional Icelandic Food

SVIÐ

It is not the most attractive food in Iceland, but it has been eaten traditionally for centuries. It is usually served with smoked sheep's head and mashed potatoes. Nowadays, it is only available in speciality restaurants.

HARÐFISKUR

It is a type of fish that is not salted, especially cod, dried on wooden shelves by the seaside in the cold air and wind. It is similar to Daegupo in our country. Since there is not much food, they prefer to dry what they eat.

KJÖTSUPA

A simple Icelandic lamb soup made with lamb and vegetables. The meat is cooked through to the bone, bringing out the juices, and the vegetables add a rich flavor and a subtle sweetness to the broth.

PLOKKFISKUR

A very popular fish stew among locals, made with white fish, potatoes, yellow onions, flour, milk, butter, salt and pepper. Served with Icelandic rye bread (black) covered in butter.

Hotdog (PYLSUR)

This is a typical Icelandic street food that you can find in kiosks and gas stations. But don't expect it to be cheap by international standards. An Icelandic hot dog costs between US$5 and $7.

WHALE MEAT

A traditional Icelandic dish that is controversial among many tourists. Most Icelandic restaurants serve minke whale, a practice that has been going on since the 12th century.
