Traditional Croatian food

Traditional Croatian cuisine is numerous and varied, but it is difficult to distinguish a cuisine that is unique to Croatia, because Croatian food has been influenced by the tastes and traditions of neighboring countries and other countries that have dominated Croatian territory throughout history. Traditional Croatian food has some similarities with Italian, Austrian, Hungarian and Turkish food. However, Croatian cuisine has its own interpretation and flavor.

BLACK RISOTTO

Every seafood restaurant in Croatia has crni rizot (black risotto) on their menu. Crni rizot is basically squid risotto made with squid ink, which gives the risotto its black color.

PEKA

Peka is a dish made by grilling meat, seafood, and vegetables on a grill. It can be made with any kind of meat (chicken, veal, sausage, etc.), but the most popular peka is octopus peka.

ISTARSKI FUZI

A typical homemade pasta, most popular in Istria, usually served with various stews such as mushroom, truffle, chicken or beef stew.

BRUDET

A typical Croatian fish stew, made with different types of fish and crustaceans, stewed with onions, tomato sauce, a splash of vinegar and spices. Bay leaves and chili peppers are added to the stew to taste.

Soparnik

The Ministry of Culture has declared this a part of Croatia's Intangible Cultural Heritage, a delicious pie filled with modern ingredients. There is also the Soparnik festival, which has been held in Dugi Rat every July for the past 10 years.

SARMA

The filling is basically a dish of minced meat and rice mixed with various seasonings and wrapped in sauerkraut instead of bell peppers. It is famous as a food that people eat more on cold winter days.
